In this tutorial we are going to see SOLO controlling the speed of a BLDC motor using ARDUINO UNO as the commanding unit. SOLO, here, controls the speed of this brushless DC motor which is rated for 150W in closed-loop sensorless mode using FOC ( field oriented control). Field Orientated Control (FOC) was actually developed for AC motors a long time ago but technological developments made in recent years have meant that this technology can now be used with lower voltage BLDC motors.
Hey everybody. I am very new to the whole VESC thing and I have a couple questions about programming with the VESC Tool. The only tutorial I can find is here on VESC-Project but when I go through the Motor Configuration Wizard section of the tutorial, it says that under the "Choose Motor Type" section that there are three options; BLDC, FOC, and DC and that I should select FOC.

A sensored brushless DC (BLDC) motor controller will not work with a sensorless brushless motor. On the face of it it would therefore seem logical that sensorless brushless motors are only able to operate in open loop because there are no in built sensors. However, this is not entirely the case.

To run a brushless or BLDC motor, the VESC has to be configured through the BLDC Tool. The latest version of this tool (presently V1.14) can be downloaded at www.bldc-tool.support . Both Windows and Mac compatible versions are available which will include drivers and the executable that will launch the program.
